NEW JERSEY INSECT/PEST INFORMATION

Main Insect/Pest Information Page > Bird Control

Birds can often be found nesting in vents and attics during the spring. Maintaining vent covers is very important to keep birds from entering the home. If a bird does decide to locate its nest in the home, it will only be a few weeks before the young birds fly off and the nesting material can be removed and the opening in the home patched up.

If the nest is in a hazardous area, such as a dryer or stove vent, then it would need to be removed immediately.

Pigeons

There is no more common annoyance than the droppings from roosting pigeons.

You would think it to be a simple matter to remove these pests. But the law is very specific about how you go about it. The obvious solution of using a poison of some sort is not practical due to "cross species contamination".

If you begin to eliminate starlings, robbins, etc your neighbor will quickly remind you of the law.

The methods of control vary:

  • Screening out of the area they choose as a roosting site
  • Hot wires
  • Deterrent
  • Chemicals and
  • various other alterations that convince them to move elsewhere

But the most effective method may very well be the process whereby pigeons are pre-fed an attractive food source, that is then altered to include a material that results in sterile eggs.

The result of this is less pigeons of course, but has the additional benefit of encouraging them to move elsewhere.

This science and methodology is a little complex but if implemented properly is very successful, as well as being of no harm to the other bird species.
