You know what they are because when you step in one “they stink”!
In the Fall of 1996 they appeared in Allentown, PA most probably in a shipment of something from Eastern Asia. They have spread ever further each year.
They become a nuisance pest when entering your home or building looking for a cozy wintering spot. This will be inside the walls.
They do no damage, they do not bite. Can you keep them out, get rid of them once they are in or stop them from coming out again in the Spring? To a limited extent, yes. A vacuum is your best tool, along with patience.
