NEW JERSEY INSECT/PEST INFORMATION

Main Insect/Pest Information Page > Termites

In our area, the most common Termite is the Eastern Subterranean Termite which has been around for millions of years. They and carpenter ants are responsible for lots and lots of damage to homes and business structures.

Here's the difference between an ant and a termite..

The problem with termites is they are the silent invaders. You only know you have them when you experience a reproductive swarm, discover them when construction is being done, or a surprise when a home inspection is done when you sell your home.

What you would rather not be told is that you currently have termites, have had termite past activity, or have conditions conducive to termite activity. You most probably are not aware of any of this.

For those of you involved in a Real Estate Transaction where “evidence of termite activity” is notated, you are wasting your time asking for an evaluation as to whether the evidence is active or inactive. It simply is not possible to determine to an extent whereby a statement can be issued that a structure is “termite free”!

There are numerous methods of treating a structure, some of which are:

• Liquid
• Borates
• Structural Modification
• Monitors

Typically a pest management firm chooses one over another. Here at Trius Pest Management, we use a combination of all four. This results in several lines of defense and substantially lowers fees.

Because some of you have less knowledge of “termite monitors” than other techniques, it is appropriate to identify the pros and cons of the new methodology.

There are statements made by some that a stand alone monitoring program is guaranteed to eliminate a termite colony. Our answer to that is , “get it in writing in clear, concise easily understandable language.”

Here at Trius Pest Management, our use of termite monitors is in addition to Liquid termiticide, foam termiticide, structure modification, and liquid borates.

Our experience is that the first four (4) steps are sufficient for control of the typical termite infestation. Our concern is that steps one through four can not be quantified as to effectiveness. And therefore, add a Termite Monitoring System to each and every termite service as an addtional line of defense. Remember, termites are typically hidden inside the walls of a structure, looking inside the walls to confirm they are gone is not practical.

So as to confirm that the steps we have taken are effective, we install monitors in select soil locations as part of every termite service we perform. Because a typical termite infestation has a source outside the structure, and because “monitors” intercept and detect ongoing activity, monitors prove to be very useful. As we inspect and confirm activity, we can treat and control them there with a “low level bait”.

The benefit of this methodology is less quantity of pesticides (Termiticides), lower fees, and confirmed control.
